A silky fairytale with lots of make-up and coloured lights
A play we're actually afraid to play.
We can't sing but we do it anyway.
We are princes.
We are knights.
Hoarse and in torn tracksuits we fall in love.
A pathetic fairytale with make-up and coloured lights.
The men play women and the women play men.
We think that's normal.
You may laugh, but actually that's not what we intended.

Jetse Batelaan
In 2005 Jetse created the theatre hit Performance in which Hopefully Nothing Happens, in which also Martin Hofstra and René Geerlings played a part. This absurd comical performance was rewarded with the 'Golden Cricket 2005', the prize for best youth performance in the Netherlands and was being staged by Max. on various international festivals. In 2008, Jetse created The Wagging Finger at Max., which was nominated for two theatre prizes (Golden Cricket 2008) and two festivals. For his work, Jetse received among others the VSCD Mime- and the Erik Vos Prijs. Jetse Batelaan is regular guest director at RO Theater (Rotterdam).

Quote
From the jury record of the 'Golden Cricket 2008' nomination, the prize for best youth performance in the Netherlands, for The Wagging Finger: "Director Batelaan and his actors succeed in discussing the dull norms- and values debate in their own witty way: refreshingly absurd, disorganized, daring and very intelligent."

The Press on Play
"TONEEL is clever and funny. And pretty strange." (NRC Handelsblad) "This fragmentary, intriguing performance moves you and makes you laugh and watch breathless." (www.toneelblog.nl)  "This unique director (literally one of a kind) will mislead you in every possible way. (…) How does he fix it, when basically nothing really happens, the audience still stays on its chair. And how come we laugh about climbing ropes with blinking lights, phones that ring spontaneously and a smoke machine in an empty gymnastic hall. (…) Or is this what he wants to achieve, that damned producer that knows the game of theatre like the back of his hands? Or is this performance not quite a success, and not because we simple minds don't understand what the intelligent director triest o tell us?  Or on the contrary did it succeed extremely well because we ask ourselves these questions?
